Everything You Need to Know About Coronavirus (And How to Reduce the Risk of Catching It)

With the increasing cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) not only in Australia but all over the world, First Aid Pro is doing its part in closely monitoring the situation and following the guidance from health government agencies, including Australian Government Department of Health and World Health Organisation (WHO).

There has been a continuous surge of concerns over the effect of COVID-19 on our environment and in our health generally. In this blog, we compile everything you need to know about COVID-19, and how to reduce the risk of catching the said virus.

What is Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Coronavirus is an infectious disease that can cause respiratory illness to people. It circulates in animals that have the capability of transmitting between animals and humans such as bats, camels, cattle, and cats.

This highly virulent virus is first recorded in Wuhan in the Hubei province of China where health officials thought it may be linked to the selling of live animals to a seafood market in Wuhan. The coronavirus outbreak has been swift to spread and quickly became the coronavirus pandemic.

Recognising the possible signs and symptoms of COVID-19

The primary symptoms of coronavirus are fever, cough, and experiencing breathing difficulties or shortness of breath. According to WHO, the symptoms may appear two to fourteen days after exposure to the virus and the severity can range from mild to severe.

Complications for the virus can lead to much more serious illnesses such as pneumonia, if not recognized early and do not receive proper treatment.

If you are over the age of 60 or have underlying health conditions such as diabetes, chronic lung disease, asthma, heart failure or heart diseases, or basically have a weakened immune system, we recommend contacting a healthcare provider immediately. People with said conditions are more vulnerable to the virus compared to others.

Reduce the risk of catching the COVID-19 virus

We encourage everyone to follow the WHO guidelines to avoid the spread of the virus.

  • Cover the mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing

  • Maintain social distancing or a distance of at least two meters (six feet) from others

  • Wash your hands regularly using soap and clean water

  • Avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth after touching unclean surfaces

  • Regularly disinfect your belongings and wear a reliable mask to avoid cross-infection

Currently, there is no vaccine or specific treatment for COVID-19, but symptoms can be treated. It is important to follow preventive guidelines, infection control and supportive measures to help 'flatten the curve'.
